Star Trek was created by Gene Roddenberry and first aired in 1966. It is the most successful science fiction TV media franchise of all-time.
In the original series, the crew of the USS Starship Enterprise, a space exploration ship constructed in the 23rd century by the United Federation of Planets, embarked on a mission “to boldly go where no man has gone before, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations.”
Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels (1726) and the 1956 sci-fi movie Forbidden Planet served as inspiration.
