North Vietnam (Democratic Republic of Vietnam) and South Vietnam (Republic of Vietnam) and their allies fought each other in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia during the Vietnam War.

The United States and other anti-communist countries backed South Vietnam, while the Soviet Union and China backed North Vietnam. It was the second Indochina War and a significant Cold War proxy conflict between the US and the Soviet Union.

Between 1965 and its withdrawal in 1973, the direct US military involvement significantly increased. Fighting continued into the civil wars in Laos and Cambodia, which culminated in the communist takeover of all three nations in 1975.
